The Lion City Sailors Academy U10 team recently etched their names in history by clinching the championship title at the FCB Academy 7s tournament in Bangkok. Facing tough competition, these young footballers displayed remarkable skill, resilience, and teamwork, proving they are ready for any challenge that comes their way.

Success, as Head Coach Kevin revealed, was rooted in the team’s unity and discipline both on and off the pitch. “Throughout the whole tournament, they were looking out for each other off the pitch while fighting for one another on it,” he shared.

“The players constantly demanded more from themselves and their teammates, which pushed everyone to do even more.”

However, this wasn’t an overnight success story.

“At the start of the season, we knew that we were playing in this tournament, so the preparation wasn’t a short process,” Kevin explained. “All the coaches involved did their part, and their help was crucial. Constantly working on our game based on the club’s methodology and sticking to it even in difficult moments was a good experience for the players.”

The journey to victory was marked by moments that will stay with the team forever. One such highlight was the pre-game huddle. “The pre-game huddle was the place to be! Every single player was fired up for the game,” Kevin recalled. “Even in a small huddle, I couldn’t hear myself. Seeing everyone celebrating together after the winning goal is a moment we will treasure.”

For Riyadh, one of the players, the camaraderie among teammates stood out. “My teammates are very cooperative and supportive with each other. We work together outside and inside the field,” he said.

“To be part of this team really makes us all united as one.”

Among the standout performances, Maximus shone brightest as he was named Player of the Tournament. Reflecting on his journey, he admitted, “I felt nervous about making a mistake, but after the first match, I got confident. The coaches helped me gain more and more confidence. Then I felt excited for each match to come.”

Maximus credited his teammates for their unwavering support, saying, "My teammates always encouraged me, even when I made a mistake. It meant a lot for me to be nominated and travel with the team."

When asked about receiving the Player of the Tournament accolade, Maximus’ humility was evident. He shared, "It felt very exciting, and I was very grateful for the recognition."

However, he also acknowledged that the true value of the tournament went beyond individual awards.

Reflecting on the experience, he emphasised the importance of preparation and adaptability. “I learned that every match can be challenging and tough and that I need to always be ready to compete,” he said.

Coach Kevin echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of facing different opponents. “Playing in a different environment and not knowing exactly how our opponents will play makes us adapt to situations quickly, which I think is important. Competing in games that are tough raises the level and forces the players to be on the top of their game.”

The Bangkok trip wasn’t all about football. Off the pitch, the players bonded and explored their surroundings, creating lasting memories.

“On the first day there, the players went out for sightseeing and bought nutritional snacks,” Kevin said. “Having spent most of the second day at the tournament venue, the players had some time together to relax at the pool before dinner.”

Maximus reminisced about their time together, saying, “Eating as a team and resting was the best off the field."

The FCB Academy 7s tournament was more than just a competition; it was a stepping stone for the young talents of Lion City Sailors Academy. The team’s success in Bangkok highlights their potential and lays a strong foundation for future endeavors. As Coach Kevin aptly put it, “Experiences like these will help the players improve even more.”
